What Is The Story Related To Somvati Amavasya?

There once lived a poor Brahmin family consisting of a husband, a wife and a daughter. Time went by and the daughter eventually grew up to a pretty and nubile. However, the curse of poverty impeded her way to get married until a monk visited the Brahmin’s house and was pleased by the service of the daughter. Upon being asked about the girl’s no suitable match so far, the sage predicted that she had no marriageable line in her palm. To remedy the situation, the sage advised that the daughter serves the Dhobin (washerwoman) family that resided a few miles away from the Brahmin’s house. The Vaidhya Yoga that the Brahman’s girl is affected with could be removed once the woman applies a vermilion of her demand in his marriage. Later, the girl was told by her father to serve the washerwoman. The obedient daughter followed her father’s advice, went to the washerman’s house and did all his household chores discretely and came back to her house. Her identification remained unknown to the family of a washerwoman with a daughter-in-law and her son. Eventually, the washerwoman knew her identity and asked why she cleaned her household chorus surreptitiously. The daughter of Brahman told her the story including the advice of the sage. The washerwoman named Sona thought of helping her. The moment she applied the vermilion of her husband on the girl, her husband died. She knew that her husband was dead. Since she accompanied the girl without eating anything, on her way back to her home, the washerwomen found a Peepal tree, worshipped it, and did a Parikrama around the tree. Coincidentally, that was the day of Somvati Amavasya. The miracle of the festival and the vrat that the washerwoman observed unintentionally made her husband alive. Since then, the festival of Somvati Amavasya remained in practice for married women for the longevity of their husbands.

Conclusion

The festival of Somvati Amavasya is an auspicious festival involving married women as devotees who worship Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati for the well-being and long life of their respective husbands. It is a very age-old festival celebrated with devotion by the devotees.
