Jaya Ekadashi Vrat Katha (tale)

The legend has it that there once ruled a Chakravarti (a universal ruler) king named Harishchandra. He was from Solar Dynasty. Although he was a pious and kind-natured king, the most indomitable personality trait he had was his impregnable truth. He was a man of words and never ever sided with lies as long as he lived.

According to the legend mentioned in Aitareya Brahamana, king Harishchandra did not have a son. For this, he observed rigorous medication to lord Varuna subsequent to the advice of Lord Narada. While granting the boon, Lord Varuna made him promise that he would have to make a sacrifice when the right came. Days later, king Harishchandra became the father of a son named Rohita. Lord Varuna, as per the promise he made to Harishchandra appeared, demanding the king’s sacrifice. After too many prevarications resulting in Rohita becoming an adult, Harishchandra agreed to the sacrifice. However, his son escaped the sacrifice and took refuge in a forest. Enraged Varuna cursed Harishchandra with stomach sickness. Meanwhile, Rohita kept on escaping from being sacrificed until he replaced himself with Sunahshepa as a human sacrifice. However, the prayer of Sunahshepa to the divine entities of Rigveda saved him from being sacrificed. The effects of prayer also cured the stomach sickness of H Harishchandra.

In another tale associated with king Harishchandra, it is told that once he was feeling downcast and mulling over ending his own life as he lost his kingdom, his son, and his wife.  Then sage Gautam visited him. After listening to his griefs, he advised him to religiously observe Aja Ekadashi vrat which will put an end to his miseries for good. The effects of the Ekadashi vrat cured the king of all the sins, made his son alive, and restored his past royal glory. At the end of the day, he attained salvation with his family.
