The Story Of Hari Prabodhini Ekadashi Vrat

According to the epic, Mahabharata, once king Yudhishthira asked Lord Krishna about the importance of Hari Prabodhini Ekadashi and why it is observed. At this, Lord Krishna said that Hari Prabodhini Ekadashi vrat is one of the most significant religious observances which effectively eliminates a devotee’s sins and sufferings, blessing him with many rewards, including peace, happiness and prosperous life.

The story of Hari Prabodhini Ekadashi goes like this –

Once goddess Lakshmi objected to Lord Vishnu’s sleeping habits, such as there was a time when he slept for days, and there was a time when he barely slept at all for days. That sleeping habit of Vishnu caused deprival of many gods from meeting him, an uncomfortable situation that Lakshmi thought would be taken advantage of by demons to attack heaven, and inflict suffering and tyranny on humans and earth. The logic of Lakshmi got Vishnu into thinking of finding out a remedy to the situation.

Meanwhile, lord Vishnu was informed by saints and sages that a demon named Shankhyayan had stolen Vedas in his sinister attempt to deprive humans of learning Veda. Lord Vishnu fought against the demon and recovered the Vedas. After the gruelling battle, Vishnu slept for four months, a period called Shayani Ekadashi and woke up on Kartik Shuddha Ekadashi, also called Prabodhini Ekadashi.

Those observing vat on Hari Prabodhini Ekadashi gain divine blessings of Lord Vishnu, along with salvation.
