What Is Papmochani Ekadashi Vrat?

Papmochani Ekadashi Vrat is an extremely auspicious day for the devotees following the Hindu religion. The observance of the festival is believed to grant total absolutions from the sins of a devotee observing the fast on this day with absolute devotion and sanctity. It is called Papmochani because it falls on Krishna Paksha of Chaitra month.

The festival is so powerful that it is said to neutralise the most heinous sin called the sin of Brahmahatya (an act of killing a Brahmin). In simple words, the festival is known as the remover of sins of a devotee following it with all devotions and staunch dedications.

Story Of Papmochani Ekadashi Vrat

Once the son of sage Chyavana,Medhavi was doing Tapasya (meditation) in a forest. He observed the meditation for years due to which the throne of Lord Indra shook. Fearing premonition, Lord Indra sent forth a fairy called Manjughosha to destroy the meditation of sage Medhavi. The stunning beauty of the fairy bewitched Medhavi, who then broke off his meditation and started to live with the fairy. After some months of living together with Medhavi, the fairy asked him to permit her to leave. Then Medhavi came to his sense, realizing that the fairy was responsible for prompting him to end his meditation. Enraged by her deed, Medhavi cursed the fairy to become an imp. The fairy got scared of the curse and pleaded to sage Madhavi for forgiveness, explaining to him that she was just following the instructions of Lord Indra. After she pleaded for forgiveness for several times with folded hands and tears in eyes, the sage Medhavithen advised her to observe Papmochani Ekadashi Vrat due to which his curse will be uplifted. The fairy followed his advice attentively and observed the ritual devotionally. Later, she was cured of the curse of the sage due to the miracle of Papmochani Ekadashi vrat.

The festival is believed to eradicate one’s sins or even the curse of Brahmahatya.
