The Story Behind The Celebration Of Janmashtami Festival

Remember that the reason Lord Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated on the eight-day of Ashtami is that Krishna is the eighth child of his mother, Devaki.

The story behind the celebration of Janmashtami relates to the kingdom of Mathura reeling under the relentless tyranny of Kansa, who was also the maternal uncle of Krishna. He happened to marry off his sister, Devaki to Vasudeva. When he was escorting the newly-weeded couple on a chariot, a celestial prophecy from the sky thundered his impending death at the hand of the 8th child of Devaki. The prophecy enraged Kansa, who, in turn, put the newly married couple behind the bar and kept them under surveillance. Kansa instructed the soldiers standing guard there to inform him immediately of any child his sister bears so that he would kill it to evade the curse.

Thence, the sequence of infanticide done by Kansa continued until Lord Krishna was born as the eighth child of Devaki. However, the divine miracle was such that when Krishna was born, all the guards fell to sleep, doors of the prison cell opened automatically, and then Vasudeva took newly born Krishna to Nanda and his wife Yashoda at Gokul and came back to his prison cell withYasodha’s daughter, a divine incarnation calledYogaMaya.

Thus, Krishna though was born in a prison cell but was raised in Gokul and eventually killed Kansa.
